A waste heat recovery power plant is an energy recovery heat exchanger that recovers heat from hot streams with potential high energy content, such as hot flue gases from a diesel generator or steam from cooling towers or even waste water from different processes and then converts it into electricity. The main areas of interest would be gas turbines open cycle power plants, cement, glass and steel processing and manufacturing plants.
Waste Heat Recovery is the process of collecting heat from a process that would otherwise be lost and converting it into useful energy through heat exchange process. The energy generated can be in different form of energy such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, mechanical energy and electric power. Heat exchanger is the key component in this system in which transfer of heat energy between two fluids takes place. The resulting hot fluid can be used as replacement of fossil fuel to process heat or to spin the turbine to generation electricity.
Any exhaust gas stream with temperatures above 250°F (120°C) has the potential for significant waste heat recovery.

Common Heat Recovery Devices
Waste heat found in the exhaust gas of various processes or even from the exhaust stream of a conditioning unit can be used to preheat the incoming gas. This is one of the basic methods for recovery of waste heat. Many steel making plants use this process as an economic method to increase the production of the plant with lower fuel demand.
There are many different commercial recovery units for the transferring of energy from hot medium space to lower one.
|Recuperator||A device for waste heat recovery that works by counter-flowing hot gases and cold air through a heat exchanger.|
|Regenerator||A cyclic heat storage device which continuously stores and releases energy.|
|Heat pipe exchanger||A thermal energy absorbing and transferring system and have no moving parts and hence require minimum maintenance.|
|Heat wheel||A type of energy recovery heat exchanger consists of a circular honeycomb matrix of heat-absorbing material, which is slowly rotated within the supply and exhaust air streams of an air-handling system.|
|Economizer||A mechanical device intended to reduce fuel consumption for boiler.|
|Heat pumps||A device that transfers heat energy against to the temperature gradient.|
|Run around coil||Comprises two or more multi-row finned tube coils connected to each other by a pumped pipework circuit. The pipework is charged with a heat exchange fluid, normally water, which picks up heat from the exhaust air coil and gives up heat to the supply air coil before returning again.|
